Oh Sukumari features Thiruveer and Aishwarya Rajesh in lead roles, and they have teamed up for the first time for this film, which impressed one and all with its promos. Directed by Bharat Dharshan, the romantic drama has music by Bharath Manchiraju and has hit the screens today. Read our review here.

Plot

Oh Sukumari revolves around a young woman named Daamini (Aishwarya Rajesh). She has a strange condition that causes anyone who touches her to receive an electric shock. Due to this condition, Daamini’s father finds it difficult to find a suitable match for her. On the other hand, Yadagiri (Thiruveer), a wannabe politician, agrees to marry Daamini. Sadly, he is kept in secret about Daamini’s condition. Yadagiri gets the shock of his life when he discovers Daamini’s unusual problem on their wedding night. How he manages the situation from there forms the basic story of the film.

Performances

Thiruveer is a good actor, but he does not get to do much in Oh Sukumari. The subject itself is quite female-centric, and he is forced to just go with the flow. Apart from a few scenes with Aishwarya Rajesh, Thiruveer sleepwalks in his role. Aishwarya Rajesh is the heart and soul of the film and tries hard to keep the audience interested. Her performance in fun scenes keeps the mood light, but her role could have been better. Muralidhar Goud is getting repetetive in the Telangana based characters. Vishnu Oi plays a small role and evokes a few laughs. Jhansi irritates in a Cringe Comedy Characters and others barely register.

Technical Aspects

The production values of Oh Sukumari are not that great. The camerawork is good, but the production design should have been better. Bharat Manchiraju’s music is ordinary as none of the songs impress. But the background score is decent. The writing is weak, and the screenplay is even worse. There are no standout moments in the script, and the basic commercial format has been followed, which feels so old. The lyrics, dialogues, and thrill factor are ordinary.

Positives:

Aishwarya Rajesh’s Screen Presence

Negatives:

Dull screenplay
Silly execution
Character graphs
Forced comedy

Analysis

When you read Oh Sukumari’s story on paper, the central idea of the female lead having a strange condition that causes electric shocks seems quite interesting. However, it is already revealed in the Trailer itself meaning that the director has to completely justify the film with good writing and ample comedy. But the director faltered in that department completely.

Director Bharat Dharshan makes a mess of the story and comes up with a silly screenplay.

The first half is filled with forced comedy and takes forever to reach its conflict point. The interval bang, where the twist is revealed, does create some interest for the audience. But what follows is a huge mess from which the romantic drama never recovers.

The director pens several scenes involving family drama and highlights the husband-wife relationship in the second half. However, all of this is presented in such a dull manner that it instantly bores the audience and makes it difficult to sit through the rest of the film. The director attempts to narrate multiple tracks, but none of them make much sense.

The lack of interest from the cast is evident in several scenes. Perhaps they had an idea of where the film was heading during the shoot itself. The character arcs of the lead pair are also uneven. Aishwarya’s mannerisms and slang irritate after a point as she overdoes them.

Logic goes for a toss in several scenes, and one wonders why the film was not panned at the scripting stage itself. When you have actors like Thiruveer and Aishwarya Rajesh, you expect engaging content. Apart from the neatly cut trailer, Oh Sukumari fails to entertain on almost every level and ends up as a lethargic watch this weekend.

Bottom Line: Oh My God, So Irritating!

Rating:1.5/5
