US President Donald Trump framed policies to keep immigrants at bay and increased scrutiny to deport several illegal immigrants. Amidst the disdain on immigrants, an Indian-American tech executive had helped the US in one of its crucial military rescue mission, when US’ Apache helicopter was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz in the ongoing US-Iran war.
When Apache was attacked by Iran, the US Navy used an autonomous drone boat to save the crew of the helicopter shot at the Strait. For the first time that the US Navy used a remote-operated autonomous surface vessel to rescue personnel at sea. The vessel, known as Corsair, was manufactured by Texas-based Saronic Technologies, which was co-founded by Indian-American engineer Vibhav Altekar.
Corsair, deployed by the US Armed Forces for unmanned missions, is a 24-ft vessel running on diesel and can travel at a speed of 35 knots, and can go to a range beyond 1,000 nautical miles carrying payloads up to 1,000 pounds. The AI-powered vessel is part of US Navy’s Task Force 59, which manages uncrewed vessels and AI-enabled drones.
Vibhav Altekar is the Chief Technology Officer of Saronic Technologies. Having pursued electrical engineering at the University of California, Altekar heads the company’s autonomous systems and software architecture wings.
He is considered an expert in autonomous systems and maritime technology and had spent a major part of his career on projects related to the US Department of Defense. The company’s website also mentions that Altekar’s work involved coordinating cross-disciplinary groups linked to perception, machine learning, navigation, command and control systems and systems integration.
Altekar also worked at defence technology company Anduril, where he led a project on the Royal Australian Navy’s Ghost Shark drone submarine.
The LinkedIn profile of Saronic Technologies mentioned that it holds a production contract worth USD 392 million with the US Navy for autonomous surface vessels. The company focuses on developing autonomous maritime systems used by defence personnel.
Founded in September 2022 by former Navy SEAL Dino Mavrookas and three others including Vibhav Altekar, the company is headquartered in Austin and Texas.
