Supreme Court Quashes FIRs Filed Against Student Protesters

In a big relief for thousands of youngsters, the Supreme Court of India has struck down all police complaints and FIRs filed against people who joined the nationwide anti-NEET protests led by the Cockroach Janata Party in between July 20 and 25 in New Delhi.

The apex court used its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to quash these cases completely. The court stated that this decision was necessary to safeguard the bright future and careers of young, peaceful protesters across the country.

Additionally, the court also clearly ruled that state governments and police forces cannot start any fresh investigation or register new cases regarding these specific protest dates.

The protests were organized to demand the resignation of the Union Education Minister following intense controversy surrounding the medical entrance examination.

While providing general relief to thousands of youngsters, the apex court made a key exception for the national capital. It granted full permission to the Central Government and Delhi Police to proceed with filing new legal cases against 2,873 specific individuals with criminal background and record who took part in these protests.

Interestingly, the Supreme Court’s decision comes after the Cockroach Janta Party dropped its September 5 Delhi protest plans as the government promised the Supreme Court it would honor its commitments, including dropping all police cases from the July 20 Jantar Mantar demonstration.
