Varanasi In Hollywood: Rajamouli Takes A Grounded Approach

Indian cinema is increasingly looking beyond domestic markets, with filmmakers adopting different strategies to connect with international audiences. Interestingly, three of the biggest Indian films have taken completely different approaches.

Firstly, Yash’s Toxic was shot in English, allowing the makers to directly target global viewers without relying entirely on dubbing. This was a bold move, but sadly the English version ended as a disaster at the box office.

Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana is taking a technology-driven route. The makers are using AI lip-sync technology for the English version, enabling characters to appear as if they are speaking English naturally. The idea is to make the film more accessible to international audiences while retaining its original performances.

However, S. S. Rajamouli appears to be following a different path with Mahesh Babu’s Varanasi. We at Gulte have learned exclusively that the film will primarily be released in Telugu with English subtitles for overseas viewers. Rajamouli seems confident that strong storytelling and visuals can overcome language barriers.

This approach is similar to how several international films have found worldwide success while staying true to their native languages. At the same time, reports indicate that the international version of Varanasi may have a slightly shorter runtime compared to the domestic release.

With Toxic, Ramayana, and Varanasi taking different routes, one thing is clear: Rajamaouli is a master of all trades and follows what his heart says and that is why he is a legendary director. Varanasi hits the screens on April 7, 2027.
