In a latest update, the US cellular giant AT&T confirmed on Friday that it has been notifying millions of consumers about a fresh data breach.
The data breach reportedly allowed the cybercriminals to steal the phone records of ‘nearly all’ of its customers. The stolen data contains phone numbers of both cellular and landline customers. The breah also allowed the cybercriminals to have the data of calls and messages, like who contacted who and via text or call.
This data stolen was from May 1, 2022 to October, 31, 2022 as well as on January 2, 2023. The data of nearly 110 million people is assumed to be stolen. AT&T also acknowledged the customer records were exposed in a cloud database that was protected only by a username and password and no multi-factor authentication needed.
However, the data stolen does not include the content of calls or texts, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, or any other personally identifiable information. ATT reset the passwords for millions of customers earlier this yer after the company acknoledged a data breach from 2018 involving appoximately 7.6 million current ATT account holders and roughtly 65 million former account holders.
