The Donald J Trump administration in the United States is coming down heavily on immigration population that has been residing in the U.S. over the years. The Homeland security has now imposed a new regulation regarding the ongoing deportation drive.
Homeland security has made it clear that self deportation is the best practice for illegal immigrants to leave the country and warned of serious consequences when it comes to forced deportation.
The Trump administration is reportedly planning to impose a daily fine of up to $998 on migrants who remain in the U.S. despite having final deportation orders. This roughly converts to ₹86,000 per day if a person stays in U.S. even after getting deportation order.
This policy, based on a 1996 law, was first enforced in 2018 and is now being revived as the Trump administration cracks down heavily on the legal immigration population. The Department of Homeland Security is urging affected migrants to self-deport using the CBP Home app. Failure to comply could also lead to property seizures.
This move is part of a broader immigration crackdown, aiming to pressure over 1.4 million deportable migrants. In particular, NRIs will have to be aware of what is happening as bearing such huge fines after receiving the deportation notice is not going to be an easy task.
