Proud Moment! Vinayak Appointed As US Vaccine Chief

In a significant moment that channels independent leadership, Indian-American oncologist-hematologist Vinayak Prasad has been appointed as the new director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Vinayak Prasad will supervise the regulation of vaccines, blood products, and genetic therapies.

Vinayak is popular for his candid views and sharp criticism of public health policies. His appointment comes at a time when the FDA faces immense scrutiny. Lauding Vinayak’s scientific rigor, independence, and transparency, FDA Commissioner Martin Makary asserted that his leadership would bring much-needed reform and transparency to CBER’s functioning.

Vinayak’s stance during the COVID-19 pandemic on a few pandemic-era policies like mask mandates and vaccines for children stirred nationwide curiosity. Apart from his impeccable credentials in healthcare, Vinayak is also a well-known public intellectual. He often echoes his views on vaccine and healthcare policies via his Substack newsletter, ‘Sensible Medicine,’ and his podcast, ‘The Plenary Session.’ Vinayak has also written books such as Malignant and Ending Medical Reversal, in which he criticized the policies as flawed medical practices and voiced his support for evidence-based healthcare reforms.

Raised by his Indian immigrant parents in Ohio and Chicago, Vinayak graduated in healthcare ethics and physiology at Michigan State University and completed his medical education and training at premier U.S. institutions. He is currently working as a professor at UCSF.
