NRIs In US Complain Of Discrimination At Workplace!

After facing forcible deportations and arrests, non-resident Indians in US are complaining of ill-treatment in the foreign land. A few Indians are disappointed over the discrimination being meted out to them in the country.

In one incident that could reflect the discrimination, an Indian employee in the US said that he was told to ‘stop speaking in meetings’ due to his accent. Posting the same on Reddit, the 32-year-old man voiced his disappointment with the workplace discrimination he experienced.

He said that everyone in his team is an American and when asked a team member, (aged 55 years) about the update of a project, his colleague asked him to stop speaking in meetings because he could not understand the Indian’s accent.

The man said that this experience made him feel dismissed and insulted. He said that he has always put in efforts to be professional and clear. Nobody complained like this before as I had been working with the same client for nearly one year, he wrote on Reddit. His post sparked a discussion about different accents and workplace etiquettes.

In another incident, a San Francisco-based Indian woman said she felt belittled after being excluded at a work event due to her dietary preferences. Known as ‘The Wicked Vegetarian’ on the internet, Runjhun Misra said that she felt excited when her office management informed employees not to bring lunch the following day as it would be provided to them.

But on that afternoon, Runjhun was ‘hangry’ on knowing that there was not a single vegetarian option available for her. She vented out her anger on Instagram by speaking about the troubles Indian vegetarians face in the US.

In the Insta video, she said: “So finally I walk in and I see this huge array of sandwiches.” A physician and medical news correspondent by profession, Runjhun said that there were more than 60 different varieties of sandwiches including halal, kosher and even gluten-free options.

But when she asked for vegetarian sandwich, there was complete silence. She wondered why vegetarians are not given any consideration and cited examples of not being able to find plant-based foods.

After sometime, she was told that she could make a vegetarian sandwich by carefully peeling back all the layers of meat placed between the bread slices and consider it vegetarian. This completely irritated her. Many netizens agreed with her and said they too faced similar problems. What once was considered a favourite destination for many Indians now, appears to be a land of endless struggles.
