The immigration enforcement authority under the Donald Trump administration in the United States has started taking an extremely harsh approach toward the immigrant population. The situation has become so serious that ICE is now accused of profiling people based on their accent and the way they speak.
In Columbia Heights, Minnesota, ICE agents are reportedly going door to door and targeting people based on how they sound. They are demanding proof of citizenship and detaining individuals when they refuse to comply.
In the video, a man is standing near a garage on private property when ICE agents approach him and demand identification.
The man states that he does not have to show ID. He is not suspected of any crime, he is on private property, and the agents allegedly do not have a warrant. He then asks why he is being asked to provide documents.
An agent then openly says, “Because of your accent.” The man responds by pointing out the obvious, saying, “You have an accent too.”
The agent then asks, “Where were you born?” The man replies with the same question. At that point, the agent escalates the situation. He orders the man to put his hands behind his back, then physically grabs him, pushes him against the garage, and restrains him.
Another agent steps directly in front of the camera to block the recording, while another joins in restraining the man on private property. If this becomes the standard method of operation for immigration authorities, many fear that everyone could be in serious trouble going forward.
