Vice-President JD Vance’s wife Usha has announced she is pregnant with their fourth child, even as buzz on their separation has been gaining ground. Usha revealed the same through her social media handle on X. In the post, the second lady said she is looking forward to welcoming a boy in late July.
The announcement would add to her set of records which she had already achieved. Usha is the first person of colour to become Second Lady and the youngest Second Lady since the Truman administration. Her pregnancy would make her the first sitting Second Lady to bear a child.
On Tuesday, Vice President JD Vance, 41, shared on social media: “We’re very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July.”
Forty-year-old Usha and Vance are parents to three young children — Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel.
Chilukuri Usha’s parents moved to the US from Andhra Pradesh to the US and settled in the suburbs of San Diego, California. Her father is a mechanical engineer and mother a molecular biologist.
In 2010, Usha met JD Vance as a student at Yale Law School when they joined a discussion group on “Social decline in white America”. They got married in 2014.
Before becoming the Second Lady, Usha Vance had a legal career, including a job as a corporate litigator at firm Munger, Tolles & Olson in San Francisco.
It is very rare for the US top leaders to have children while in office. Two former First Ladies also became pregnant when their husbands were serving as President. Frances Cleveland, the wife of President Grover Cleveland, gave birth to their second child in the White House during his second term in office.
Jacqueline Kennedy, the wife of President John F. Kennedy, gave birth to their third child, in August 1963. However, the baby, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, died from a pulmonary disease just 38 hours after birth as Patrick was born 5.5 weeks early.
Significantly, JD Vance has raised an alarm on the reducing birthrates and even termed Democrats as ‘childless cat ladies’ and ‘anti-family and anti-child’. He said that the lack of desire to have children is a ‘civilizational crisis’. In 2025, he said he wanted more babies in the USA.
