Big Blow to Trump: Supreme Court Says No to Tariffs

United States president, Donald Trump had been extensively using tariff impositions on global countries in order to get his way with them. Any country that have not been aligning with United States had been facing heavy tariffs, and this became a serious concern.

Incidentally, this matter came under the jurisdiction of the United States Supreme Court and the verdict on the same was announced a few minutes back.

The Supreme Court ruled that President Trump exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act by imposing sweeping global tariffs. The Act, intended for national emergencies, does not permit such tariffs and it was made very clear that Donald Trump went out of his way to impose the same.

Incidentally, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 against Trump’s tariffs enforced under a federal law intended for national emergencies.

The Court stated that if Congress intended to grant such extraordinary power under any circumstances, it would have done so explicitly. But that is not the case now as Donald Trump operated on his own which got invalidated by the Supreme Court a short while back.

The ruling does not affect sector-specific tariffs on steel, aluminum, and certain other goods imposed under separate legal authorities.
