Ever since Donald Trump took office in January last year, sweeping changes have been made to the immigration policy by the USA administration to revamp the existing process and keep a check on illegal and unworthy applicants from entering the country. Now, Trump’s close aide and Vice President JD Vance has opened up about the ongoing debate.
Speaking at an event in Georgia, Vance was asked about the fate of H-1B Visa holders in securing the ambitious Green Card status, also known as a Permanent Resident Card, which allows more privileges for immigrants in USA.
An Indian origin girl, who is a daughter of legal H-1B immigrants, said that it has been very difficult to get Green Card as the wait time is more than 100 years for applicants and asked how the present dispensation will fix the issue.
In reply to this question, Vance openly claimed that there is a lot of fraud in the H-1B system and many people have exploited the loopholes in the process, but he also admitted that those who came to USA have added value to the overall development of the country in several ways.
He also made startling remarks that those who come to USA or after becoming a local citizen, they should think about the country’s interests rather than the nation they came from or any group they belonged to earlier. He said one must identify oneself as American rather than as an immigrant from other country.
“The system only works if everybody thinks of themselves as an American. I remember having this conversation with my father-in-law, who’s an amazing guy,” Vance said.
He added, “My father-in-law, who came from India, who moved to the United States, who got an education and became an American citizen, never once in my life has he ever said, ‘You have to do this’ or ‘You should do this because it’s in the best interest of the country that I came from.”
These comments from JD Vance come at a time when the Trump’s administration is tightening the immigration laws and making it extremely difficult to secure the H-1B Visa which permits to work for corporate companies in USA. These remarks once again make that stance very clear.
Already, major changes have been introduced to the existing H-1B Visa processing system. An exorbitant fee of $ 1,00,000 levied for new applications is one of the stringent measures taken by the present government.
Additionally, new rules introduced in February 2026 give preference to higher-paid roles in the visa process and suggest raising the minimum salary levels for H-1B workers.
