In less than a week, the global Telugu diaspora has been shaken by back-to-back incidents of domestic violence involving non-resident Indians (NRIs) facing severe criminal charges abroad. Just a couple of days ago it was reported that a Telugu origin individual was charged with killing his wife in Washington, USA.
Adding to this unsettling trend, another tragic incident has now come to light from Australia. Reportedly, a Telugu NRI named Srinivas Atchanta, has been officially charged with murder following the death of his wife, Lavanya Achanta in Melbourne Australia. The fatal assault took place on July 7th.
What is more shocking is that both their kids were present at the crime scene when the accused has brutally killed her wife. Luckily, they are unharmed as per the police reports.
Emergency services were immediately called to a residential property in Melbourne’s north-west suburbs, where they discovered Lavanya with serious injuries. Despite the swift arrival and efforts of paramedics, she tragically passed away at the scene.
Victoria Police immediately established a crime scene and arrested Srinivas Achanta at the property. Srinivas has since been remanded in custody to face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, while local community members and neighbors express deep shock and grief over the sudden loss.
The prime motive behind the attack is yet to be established. Srinivas will be behind the bars for 12 weeks on judicial remand before the actual trial starts.
