US President Donald Trump is facing another legal challenge over his new tariff policy. A group of 25 Democratic led states has approached the US Court of International Trade, asking it to stop the new tariffs.
The states say the tariffs are illegal and will increase the prices of many imported products. They argue that businesses and consumers across the US will have to pay more because of the new taxes on imports.
Last month, the Trump administration imposed 10 to 12.5 percent tariffs on goods imported from 60 countries. The government said the move was aimed at countries that failed to stop goods made with forced labour from entering global markets.
However, the states claim the administration did not follow the proper legal process before announcing the tariffs. They also say the forced labour reason is being used to bring back broad tariffs that had earlier faced legal challenges.
The Trump administration has defended its decision, saying the tariffs will protect American workers and encourage other countries to take stronger action against forced labour.
India is also affected by the new policy. However, it received a 10 percent tariff, lower than the earlier proposed 12.5 percent, after making changes to its foreign trade rules.
The court’s decision is expected to play a key role in Trump’s trade policy going forward.
