Trump hails India, wants US to follow

For long, US President Donald Trump has been making serious allegations on the country’s electoral system. Surprisingly, he has now hailed India’s voter identification system while renewing his demand for stricter election rules in the United States. 

It is well known that Trump and his administration are pushing for strong reforms through his SAVE America Act to fix the flaws in the US voting system for various flaws. 

Through his social media post, Trump cited India’s election system and said Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had questioned how elections could be held in the US without mandatory photo identification. He used the example to again call for the passage of the SAVE America Act. 

Trump said India’s 2024 Lok Sabha election involved around 646 million voters and that less than 1 per cent of them voted by mail. He also claimed that every voter was required to carry a valid photo ID. Based on this comparison, Trump argued that the US should bring in stronger voter identification rules. 

The SAVE America Act seeks tighter rules for voter registration and identification in US federal elections. Trump and his supporters say the measure would strengthen election security by requiring proof of citizenship and photo identification.

 The bill has faced resistance in Congress, while critics argue that strict document requirements could create difficulties for eligible voters who do not have the required papers. 

In March 2026, Trump also signed an executive order seeking stronger citizenship checks for federal elections. By citing the system adopted by the largest democracy, Trump is now presenting the election system and voter identification process as a reference for the US to follow.
