USA Is No Longer A Dream Destination For Indian Students?

Building a career and settling down in USA seems to be fading dream for Indian students according to the latest reports. What was supposed to be a dream destination started losing sheen because of the recent immigration policies and job crisis in USA.

As per reports, Indian student applications to US colleges have shrunk by 15% for the upcoming academic year. The data ascertained by Common App shows that foreign applications overall have fallen by 10%. This is the biggest drop seen in recent years, with India experiencing one of the sharpest declines.

For a long time, Indian students used to occupy a sizeable number of seats in state universities and management colleges in USA. But, the trend has now started to decline.

It is well known that the US government led by Donald Trump has brought in sweeping changes to visa policies and also mulling more reforms. It brought rules that end the flexible stay system for foreign students, setting a strict four-year cap on visas.

Additionally, proposed policy change like a steep $100,000 fee for graduates using the Optional Practical Training (OPT) work program and also H-1B applications have created fear, confusion, and financial anxiety among prospective applicants.

But, the fall in student enrolment might also impact the American economy. Experts from NAFSA warn that US universities could see over 110,000 fewer international students by Fall 2026. Beyond higher education, local economies will feel the impact, as international student spending is expected to fall by over $3 billion.

Many Indian students are now looking at alternative study destinations like Germany, Ireland, and Australia, where post-study work paths remain clearer and more welcoming.
