US universities are warning international students about new visa rules that will start from September 15, 2026.
The new rules will affect students on F1 visas and exchange visitors on J1 visas. Instead of allowing students to stay based mainly on their valid student status, the US will give them a fixed period of stay.
This has become a concern for many international students because some courses, research programs and PhD studies may take longer than expected. Students who need more time could have to apply for an extension.
Universities are also advising students to be careful about international travel after September 15. Students who leave the US may face the new rules when they return.
The new system could mean more paperwork and additional immigration requirements for students.
Because of this, universities are asking international students to understand the new rules and speak with their international student offices before making travel or study plans.
