Considering the fact that artificial intelligence is going to be the future of global technology, several educational institutions have been training students in this direction. Even parents have been actively focusing on enhancing the AI skillset of their kids accordingly.
But now the Indian origin mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani is doing something very interesting and out of the box.
Mamdani announced that public schools will adopt new restrictions on artificial intelligence and classroom screen time when students return next week.
The plan would pause AI use for students until high school, while also limiting the use of laptops and tablets for younger students.
The policy will affect approximately 600,000 students which is about two-thirds of the public school system .
It applies to all software that uses student based generative AI including chatbots and AI tutors, which will be prohibited across all grades.
The mayor said the city will spend the next year studying the technology’s impact on learning before deciding on future guidelines. At a time when the world is preparing for the AI advancement, New York is going in the opposite direction in order to assess the actual impact on the young minds.
