AP Aqua Industry Faces Fresh Blow From US Anti Dumping Duty

The harsh tariff measures imposed by USA have already hit several sectors in India including the aqua industry. In another big shock to the aqua sector, the US government has announced anti dumping duty on Indian seafood with retrospective effect. This move is likely to add additional burden on exporters who rely on American market.

Reportedly, the US has announced imposing a 5.53% anti-dumping duty (ADD) on several Indian shrimp exporters for the 2024-25 review period. The move is expected to put an additional burden of around 1,000 crore on exporters.

This comes on top of the 5.77% countervailing duty already applicable to most Indian shrimp exporters.

Among all states, Andhra Pradesh is likely to be biggest sufferer because it produces over 60 percent of India’s total farmed shrimp exports. For years, local farmers and processing centers built their businesses around direct supply chains shipping high volumes straight to the US.

America was India’s largest seafood buyer in 2024-25, importing 346,868 tonnes of Indian seafood worth about $2.71 billion. Frozen shrimp made up more than 92% of India’s seafood exports to the US by value.

Higher duties can make Indian shrimp more expensive for American buyers. Exporters may have to cut their selling prices to stay in competition with other suppliers.

This could cut their profits and may also put pressure on the prices paid to aqua farmers. Farmers could then find it harder to meet rising costs of feed, seed, power and other inputs.

India is alternatively looking to improve exports to other markets such as China, Europe, Japan and the Middle East, but reducing dependence on the US will take time.
