US President Donald Trump administration has made a major move to bring artificial intelligence tools into the US government. The federal government has reached an agreement with OpenAI to provide its advanced AI models to government employees at a major discount.
Under the deal, the US federal government will get a 50% discount on access to OpenAI’s advanced models. Interestingly, there is no minimum spending commitment, allowing government agencies to use the technology based on their requirements.
The agreement was secured by the General Services Administration through its new OneGov procurement strategy. The same discount will also be available to state, local and tribal government entities.
The deal is mainly focused on helping government agencies adopt AI for their regular operations. The agreement also includes measures related to data protection and governance.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman welcomed the deal and said secure access to AI tools could help public servants improve efficiency, strengthen cybersecurity and deliver better services.
The Trump administration has been pushing for wider AI adoption across the government as part of its broader AI strategy. This latest agreement with OpenAI could mark a major step towards making AI a regular part of government operations.
