Indians Calling Shots In US Corporate Boardrooms

India has the reputation for producing one of the most prolific and highly skilled corporate minds who steer global companies with their talent. Especially many US-based corporate companies are being led by Indian-origin executives.

Now, a record number of Indians are dominating the US corporate boardrooms as per the latest data. As per these reports, 16 Indian-origin leaders joined boards of major S&P 500 companies in 2026 alone.

Companies like Walmart, Southwest Airlines, and Western Digital added these experienced Indian executives to their main board of directors. These directors will now call shots in decision making and other key aspects relating to the operations of the companies.

The massive increase shows how Indian talent has climbed up the ladder over the past few decades in corporate America. Reports highlight that the share of Indian directors in Fortune 500 and S&P 500 firms has tripled since 2018.

Today over 184 Indian-origin executives are among the list. US companies are hiring these leaders because they want directors with strong operational background and experience running big businesses.

Around two-thirds of these newly appointed Indian directors are current or former chief executive officers. These immigrants came to America decades ago and started at entry-level engineering or operational jobs. After proving their technical skills and business abilities, they steadily rose to become CEOs of top global companies.

A place in the boardroom is considered the highest authority level in a corporation that oversees the CEO, manages long-term strategy, and protects shareholder interests.
