The present head of Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, has created history after he cast his vote for the upcoming 2026 United States midterm elections. He is now the first pontiff of Vatican Ciry to exercise his voting right in the US general elections.
It is a known fact that Pope Leo XIV is a Chicago born American citizen who now heads the highest religious position of the Vatican. He has now exercised his fundamental right to vote through a mail-in ballot sent to his native state of Illinois.
Public election records in Illinois show that the head of the Catholic Church has maintained an active voting history across local and national polls over the years. Local officials confirmed receiving his request for an overseas absentee ballot ahead of the critical November midterm races.
Church observers noted that while popes traditionally maintain absolute neutrality on politics, exercising civic voting rights as an individual citizen remains completely legitimate under church laws.
What makes this news a big sensation is because Pope Leo XIV has previously spoken out publicly on major global issues, including urging peace in international conflicts and expressing concern over tough immigration enforcement policies under Trump’s rule. Even Trump also criticised him openly for Pope’s remarks.
However, Vatican representatives noted that his mail-in vote remains a strictly private decision. Pope recently underwent a medical surgery for removal of a cancerous tumour.
