Why Did AI Stocks Crash After Democrats Swept US Midterm Elections?

America’s artificial intelligence boom has largely been driven by one assumption: technology companies will continue spending hundreds of billions of dollars building the infrastructure needed to power the next generation of AI. But a political shift in Washington has suddenly introduced a new uncertainty into that equation.

On November 5, US technology stocks suffered one of their worst trading sessions in recent months, with the Nasdaq Composite falling 5.52%. The S&P 500 dropped 4.36%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 3.44%. The sell-off wiped out trillions of dollars in market value, with AI-related companies and semiconductor manufacturers among the worst affected.

The trigger was the Democratic Party’s sweeping victory in the November 3 midterm elections. Democrats won control of both the US House of Representatives and the Senate, creating a political environment in which the expansion of America’s AI infrastructure could face greater scrutiny. The immediate concern is not that the US government will stop AI development. It is that building the infrastructure required for AI could become more expensive, complicated and time-consuming.

Why are AI stocks falling?

To understand the market reaction, it is important to look beyond companies developing AI models. The current AI boom depends on an enormous physical infrastructure network. Data centres, semiconductor chips, electricity generation, cooling systems and high-capacity computing facilities are all essential to keeping AI services running. According to the International Energy Agency, electricity consumption by data centres increased 17% globally in 2025, while consumption by AI-focused data centres grew by 50%. This makes electricity availability, advanced semiconductor manufacturing and data-centre capacity critical to the future expansion of AI.”

Technology giants such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta are investing heavily in this infrastructure. A total of $400 billion was invested in data centres, according to an IEA report. However, they depend on a much larger ecosystem of companies that build and operate data centres, supply equipment and provide electricity.

This is where the Democratic victory becomes significant. Across several American states, the rapid expansion of data centres has triggered opposition from local communities. These facilities consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, while requiring large areas of land. Residents are increasingly concerned that the infrastructure being built to support technology companies could push up their electricity bills and put additional pressure on local resources.

Democratic lawmakers have been raising these concerns, calling for greater scrutiny of data-centre projects and stronger consumer protections.

The election results could give these demands greater political influence. Democrats made significant gains in states such as Texas and Georgia, which have become important destinations for data-centre investments. Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa has also pledged to halt new data-centre projects.

For investors, this creates uncertainty over whether companies will be able to expand their infrastructure at the speed they originally planned.

Who stands to lose?

The market reaction has exposed an important divide within the technology sector. Companies that own and operate data centres, along with businesses supplying power and equipment, are particularly vulnerable to any slowdown in construction.

On November 4, Applied Digital fell 8.8%, CoreWeave declined 9.5%, while Cipher Digital lost 21%. The following day, the broader sell-off intensified. Nvidia fell more than 9%, while AMD plunged 17.3%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also suffered a particularly sharp decline.

Companies such as CoreWeave are especially exposed because their business models depend on rapidly expanding computing capacity and access to financing. If construction gets delayed or becomes more expensive, their ability to generate returns on large infrastructure investments could come under pressure.

Interestingly, some of the largest technology companies initially moved in the opposite direction. Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet gained on November 4 as investors considered whether slower infrastructure expansion could actually benefit cash-rich technology giants by reducing the pressure to keep spending aggressively.

Is this the beginning of a slowdown in AI?

Not necessarily. Democrats have not proposed abandoning AI development. Their concerns are primarily about the environmental, economic and consumer costs associated with the infrastructure supporting it. However, the political shift could change the economics of the industry. More stringent approval processes, restrictions on land and power usage, and reduced tax incentives could increase the cost of building data centres.

There is also a larger problem facing the sector. Investors were already questioning whether the enormous amounts being spent on AI would generate sufficient returns. The election has added another layer of uncertainty to an industry where valuations and expectations have grown rapidly.

For India, which is attempting to build its own AI ecosystem through the IndiaAI Mission, the developments in the US offer an important lesson. AI infrastructure is not simply a technology or investment question. It is also a matter of electricity supply, water availability, land use and public policy.

The American experience shows that even when businesses have the money and technology to expand, political and public resistance can influence how quickly they can do so.

The AI boom is unlikely to disappear because of one election. But investors are beginning to recognise that its future may depend as much on politics and infrastructure policy as it does on technological breakthroughs.
