Hereditary politics are a part and parcel of Indian politics and there is no debating this fact. The scions of noted political personalities often carve a name for themselves and thrive in politics.
The newly elected chief minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai has emulated a similar feat. Basavaraj’s father, Somappa Rayappa Bommai served as the chief minister between 1996-98. Cut to now, Somappa’s son, Basavaraj Bommai was appointed as the chief minister of Karnataka by the BJP hierarchy. He took charge today.
The likes of YS Jagan and MK Stalin are also clear examples of hereditary politics. Jagan’s father, YS Rajasekhar Reddy served as the chief minister of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh between 2004-2009. After YSR’s demise, Jagan toiled hard and became the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in 2019.
As for MK Stalin, his father M Karunanidhi served as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu for five terms between 1969-2011. After Karunanidhi’s passing away in 2018, Stalin worked tirelessly and went on to become the chief minister of Tamil Nadu in this year’s elections.
On a related note, Nara Lokesh and KTR also have the opportunity to join this elite list. Can they prove themselves on the big stage and sit on the CM chair? Only time will tell.
