Former CM of UP Kalyan Singh Passes Away At 89

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh passed away in Lucknow on Saturday following prolonged illness. He was 89 years old and died due to sepsis and multi-organ failure.

On July 4, Singh was admitted in a critical condition to the ICU of Critical Care Medicine at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow.

On Friday, the hospital authorities informed that the BJP veteran’s health condition was critical after placing him on dialysis. Later in the day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Kalyan Singh in the ICU and enquired about his health.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Kalyan Singh with a tweet: “Kalyan Singh Ji gave voice to crores of people belonging to the marginalised sections of society. He made numerous efforts towards the empowerment of farmers, youngsters and women.”

Former UP Chief Minister and BSP supremo Mayawati also expressed her condolences on Twitter.

Singh began his political journey from Atrauli and won as an MLA in 1967. He registered victory as a legislator for nine terms from Atrauli. In 1991, he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He was the CM of Uttar Pradesh when Babri Masjid demolition took place in 1992. He stepped down from the post on the day the mosque was demolished.

In 1997, Singh became the CM for a second term but was removed by his party high command in 1999. Then he quit the BJP and formed his own party.

Singh was among the BJP veterans who faced trial in connection with the Babri Masjid demolition case and later acquitted by the CBI court.

Earlier this month, senior BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, visited Singh at the hospital.

Earlier, he underwent treatment at the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences.

Kalyan Singh also served as the Governor of Rajasthan.
