Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan is likely to dissolve his cabinet and bring in new ministers in a major “correction” ahead of the 2024 state election. The reports suggest that the big move is expected at a cabinet meeting at 3 pm today. Several ministers are reportedly being asked to come with resignation letters.
“Ninety per cent of the old team will be dropped,” sources told a popular news journal. Officially, there is a 20-point agenda for the meeting. Yesterday, as we know, Jagan met with Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan and reportedly informed him that he will overhaul his cabinet. He also said to have submitted to him a list of ministers set to be dropped.
The sources say that Jagan will further submit a list of new ministers to the Governor by Saturday and a new cabinet is likely to be sworn in on Monday. “Only one or two ministers from the “outgoing” team are likely to be retained,” sources quoted. “Ministers being dropped does not mean poor performance,” a minister said.
There will be five Deputy Chief Ministers. Currently, the five Deputy Chief Ministers represent the SC, ST, BC, minority and Kapu communities.
Back in 2019, Jagan had said he would pick a new team mid-term as part of his strategy for 2022. And today, the news surprised many as we can expect 2-3 ministers who may be retained and the 24-member Council of Ministers to have fresh faces. The ministers who will not be retained would be given positions in the YSR Congress Party in the districts or made the district coordinators.
