UK PM Race: Rishi Sunak Loses To Liz Truss

Liz Truss defeated Indian-origin Rishi Sunak and was named leader of the governing Conservative Party. This means Liz Truss is going to be the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She secured 81,326 votes and Rishi Sunak received 60,339 votes.

Liz Truss will be UK’s 56th Prime Minister and the third female to lead the country after Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher. Truss is an MP from South West Norfolk and previously she served as the foreign secretary of the UK under outgoing PM Boris Johnson.

The United Kingdom is going through a tough economical phase. She has promised to tackle this economic situation in the country. Upon getting elected as the new PM, Truss said, “I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy.”

Outgoing PM Boris Johnson will be travelling to Scotland on Tuesday to meet Queen Elizabeth and submit his resignation. Liz Truss will accompany Johnson and the date of swearing-in ceremony will be finalised shortly.

Also Liz Truss has a big challenge in 2024 to lead the Conservative party in the elections and retaining power will highly depend on her work for the next two years.
