Content always plays a significant role in drawing crowds to theatres and generating revenues for films. All other aspects are subservient to the commercial success of film. This is why there is a popular saying among moviegoers and industry people that ‘Content is the King’. In fact, it speaks louder than everything else.
One recent example which has once again proved that ‘Content’ will have a final say is the box office performance of Kushi and Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty. It is a known fact that both these romantic entertainers released in a span of one week.
Because of strong pre-release buzz and other factors, Kushi took a sold opening in all territories. The film performed on par with trade expectations till the end of the first weekend despite mixed talk and moderate reviews. Quite expectedly, the collections plummeted drastically on weekdays and the film evaporated from screens very quickly. Due to a wafer-thin storyline and lackluster narration, the film couldn’t gain traction beyond a certain level and ended as a flop in all areas barring Nizam and USA.
On the other side, Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty took a so-so start at the box office on its first day because of heavy competition from Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan. As the film received encouraging talk because of impressive content, the glowing word of mouth spread rapidly giving a huge momentum for collections gradually during the weekend. The film is now on track to emerge as a clean hit in all territories.
