The BRS Parliamentary party, chaired by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, has adopted an unanimous resolution demanding that the Centre introduce the bills relating to 33% reservation for OBCs and women in the Parliament and Legislative Assemblies, during the special session of the Parliament scheduled to be held from September 18.
However, this resolution drew criticism from the women in Telangana who termed it as a mockery stating that BRS did not ensure 33% reservation for women in seat allocation in the state but is demanding that the Centre provide the quota. Only 4 MLA seats were allocated to women in the Telangana Legislative Assembly, pointed out a woman leader of the Congress.
Surprisingly, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter and MLC K. Kavitha too pointed this fact about under representation of women in the Legislative Assembly.
Meanwhile, K. Chandrasekhar Rao has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the same saying that the objective of taking affirmative action to correct historical wrongs that were done to socially and educationally marginalized sections. The objective was partially achieved by providing quota to OBCs in public employment and admissions in educational institutions, the letter said.
Coming to the reservation to women, KCR claimed that the Telangana government was implementing 30% reservation for women in public employment and admissions in educational institutions. However, suitable representation in Parliament and State Legislatures was required to reflect hopes and aspirations of this section.
He reminded that the Telangana Legislature passed a resolution on June 14, 2014 requesting the Government of India to provide 33% quota for women in the Parliament and State Legislatures, but no action was initiated on this front so far, he pointed out.
