Sonia turns down Revanth’s request

The Telangana Congress is keen on electing AICC former president Sonia Gandhi as a Rajya Sabha MP from Telangana. Initially, they wanted her to contest for a Lok Sabha seat, from any of the constituency in the state and asked her file nomination papers from Medak or Khammam. The PCC leaders even sent a resolution taken by the Committee to Sonia Gandhi. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and his coterie raised the issue when they met her in New Delhi recently but there is no confirmation from Gandhi on the issue.

According to party sources, Sonia Gandhi, who is representing Amethi, has decided to retire from active politics and stay away from the polls in 2024. The buzz says Rahul or Priyanka might contest from Amethi this time around. It is believed that for the same reason that Sonia did not reply in the positive to the Telangana PCC.

However, the notification for the RS polls had made the PCC contemplate about reiterating their request to Sonia Gandhi.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is of the opinion that Sonia Gandhi need not take up any trouble if she contests for the RS polls. It is only the party MLAs who have to vote and with the Congress’ strength positioned at 64 in the Assembly, it can easily win two MP seats.

For electing each MP, 30 MLAs should cast their vote. Revanth is planning to make a request again to Sonia to contest for one of the MP seat.

Having been attacked by Coronavirus twice and being quite old, Sonia Gandhi, 78, has decided to stay away from politics. She is also battling with cancer since long.

It has to be seen how Sonia Gandhi would respond to Revanth’s plan.
