2024 Election: Is Tollywood Opening Up For Greater Good?

Published by

As the 2024 general elections approach, the landscape of political endorsements in Tollywood is undergoing a noticeable shift. In contrast to previous criticisms levelled by politicians like former actress and MLA Roja, who remarked that only Jabardasth comedians were supporting Pawan Kalyan and Chandrababu Naidu, recent developments suggest a growing alignment with the NDA alliance, which includes the Telugu Desam Party, Janasena, and the BJP, in Andhra Pradesh.

One significant moment was Megastar Chiranjeevi’s endorsement of Pawan Kalyan in Pithapuram via a video byte. Following this, popular actor Nani openly expressed his support for Janasena’s President.

These gestures mark a departure from earlier perceptions about Tollywood’s political leanings. In the 2019 elections, many prominent celebrities endorsed YS Jagan, while some indirectly supported him. However, this time around, apart from Posani Krishna Murali and anchor Shyamala, few are actively campaigning for Jagan.

Even Kona Venkat, discussing Bapatla’s development, is focusing on his uncle’s campaign rather than endorsing the YSR Congress as a whole.

Observers suggest that this shift can be attributed to several factors that happened in Andhra Pradesh as well as Telangana. Allegations include the Telangana Congress government’s perceived lack of support for the Telugu film industry, evidenced by the industry’s failure to congratulate CM Revanth Reddy after his swearing-in and the denial of permissions for major events like the Guntur Kaaram pre-release.

Such actions are believed to have soured relations between the government and the industry, and celebs don’t want a similar incident to be repeated in Andhra Pradesh.

Additionally, there’s a recognition within Tollywood of the importance of a government that doesn’t hinder the industry through measures like controlling ticket prices or closing theaters, which have adversely impacted a couple of movies’ collections in the past.

Political analysts view Tollywood’s support for the NDA alliance as a potential game-changer in the upcoming elections. The influence of these endorsements on moviegoers is expected to play a pivotal role as Andhra Pradesh heads to the polls on May 13th.
