Urbanization and extreme traffic conditions have already led to a deterioration of air quality in Hyderabad. To make matters worse, the Diwali season, which is marked by a culture of firecrackers, has caused the city’s air quality to drop to alarming levels.
The emissions from firecrackers have escalated particulate matter (PM) ratings to hazardous levels. The fine particles in PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations can penetrate the lungs, posing serious respiratory risks.
Kompally and Somajiguda are the worst-hit areas, with PM readings nearly 50 times above the safety limit. In New Malakpet, PM concentrations reached over 250 and 260, while Gachibowli, Kokapet, and Sanathnagar also reported dangerous levels well above safety thresholds.
Firecrackers are the primary reason for this dangerously high air quality index across Hyderabad. Consistent exposure to such harmful air conditions could lead to respiratory complications, and residents are advised to stay indoors to avoid more severe consequences.
