Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu yet again underlined the need for having more children and said he was contemplating to make two children mandatory for leaders contesting the local body elections.
He said that he recently met Tesla CEO Elon Musk who claimed that he has 12 children and asked Naidu to think of measures that would encourage improving the population numbers.
Though the CM made the remark on a lighter note, it needs to be pondered. With the decreasing population in Southern India, it is necessary that people think of raising more children. Else, as Naidu pointed out, trees and animals would outnumber human beings and political leaders, along with government officials, will have to govern them in the coming days.
It is worth recalling that not just Naidu, but even his counterpart in Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin too encouraged the public to have more children, at one of his public rally recently.
Naidu’s remarks on having more children would soon spring a question on why he did not walk his talk. Minister Lokesh is his only child.
About 30 years ago, over population was a concern in South India and people seriously took to family planning, which resulted in the current situation, says one analyst.
