Jana Sena president and Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Pawan Kalyan, is clearly rewriting the definition of the Deputy CM position. Here’s why:
Earlier, the Deputy CM post was more or less a non-consequential position, typically given to a non-mainstream leader in the ruling party. For instance, Jagan had nine deputy CMs during his 5-year tenure, and we can’t even remember a few of their names, such was the irrelevance of the position.
However, under the current NDA government, the Deputy Chief Minister position is now viewed as the next most powerful position after the CM seat. This shift is made possible only due to the significant impact that Pawan Kalyan has had.
While it was always expected that Pawan would be an enigmatic and dynamic politician, he is surpassing expectations with his assertive presence.
Recent events like the Kakinada port visit, the inspection of Saraswati Power lands that belong to Jagan, campaigning for the NDA in Maharashtra, and advocating for enhanced policing through the Home Minister are some of the most impactful actions Pawan has taken in just six months.
In the past, the Deputy CM used to quietly enjoy the cabinet position with minimal public appearances and influence. But that is far from the case with Pawan Kalyan.
As a charismatic leader, Pawan is always in the news, adding dynamism and value to the role of Deputy CM. He is single-handedly getting things done, which makes the job a bit easier for CM Chandrababu.
With considerable support from the NDA leadership in Delhi, the guidance of Chandrababu Naidu, and the loyalty of TDP scion Nara Lokesh, Pawan Kalyan has quickly become a formidable force.
Andhra Pradesh has never seen a Deputy CM as dynamic and assertive as Pawan Kalyan, and the chances are we may never see another leader like him in the future.
The best part is that Pawan is not getting carried away by this position. He has clearly stated that he is happy to work under the leadership of Chandrababu Naidu in the next term as well. He places Naidu’s effective leadership above his own political gains, which is a characteristic of a true leader.
