One Nation One Election: TDP And YCP On Same Track

The suspense on the “one nation one election” bill is finally a thing in the past. The bill was presented in the parliament today by Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal who introduced two Bills that would enable simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and assemblies of states and Union Territories.

Given the kind of lead that the NDA has in the parliament, the bill was passed quickly by the house with adequate majority.

269 MPs voted in favour of the bill, which is understandable, considering the NDA’s strength in the house. 198 MPs opposed the bill. The majority of the opposition came from the Congress party which claimed that this bill is against the constitutional spirit.

The Congress party firmly, totally, comprehensively rejects the One Nation, One Election bill. We will oppose its introduction. We will demand its reference to a Joint Parliamentary Committee. We believe it is unconstitutional, Congress stated.

Interestingly, enough, both Telugu Desam party and YSR Congress were on the same page with regard to the bill as both the parties approved the same. But the intentions behind this approval is vastly different for both these parties.

Telugu Desam, being the main ally of the NDA government is anyway bound to approve the bill. On the other hand, YSR Congress is hopeful that this new bill bill fast forwards the coming election, which would turn put them out of the misery that they attained in the recent election.

Now that the bill has been approved in the parliament, it will be sent forward to scrutiny in front of a Joint Political Committee that would oversee its organisational structure henceforth.

It has already been confirmed that though this bill might be approved on an immediate basis, it is likely to come to effect only after the 2029 election.
