The United States government has started what appears to be an elongated deportation drive where illegal immigrants from India are being sent back to the country. However, there is one detrimental aspect to this deportation, and this is that the male deportees are being cuffed (hands and legs) during flight.
This was acknowledged by external affairs Minister Jay Shankar in the Parliament as he said it is a standard protocol followed by the US military to the deportees during flight. He said adult male deportees will be cuffed while women and children will be let free.
However, this topic was fearlessly protested by the Congress outside the Parliament and Rahul Gandhi also partook in the same.
Congress’s protest campaign read “Humans, Not Prisoners.” The party raised serious concerns about the way in which Indians are being treated during the deportation process.
Sharing a story about a man named Harvinder Singh who was deported yesterday, Rahul Gandhi quoted “For 40 hours, we were handcuffed, our feet tied with chains and we were not allowed to move an inch from our seats. It was worse than hell”: Harvinder Singh.
“Prime Minister, listen to this man’s pain. Indians deserve Dignity and Humanity, NOT Handcuffs.” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.
Protesting Congress MPs stated “We are protesting the way in which the deportation was done—sending them in a military aircraft and that too in handcuffs is an insult to India; it’s an insult to the dignity of Indians.”
They have every legal right to deport people who are illegally in their country, and if they are proven to be Indians, then we have an obligation to receive them. But not in this manner. The govt should take action so that such a thing is not repeated and demand an explanation for this atrocious behaviour, Congress demanded.
