As part of the modernization work, the railway authorities demolished the main buildings of Secunderabad railway station, which was built in 1952. This structure, built to preserve the art and culture of that time, has become a memory of the past.
The then Nizam Nawab built the Secunderabad Railway Station in 1874. It was the central station of the Nizam Guaranteed State Railway (NGSR) until 1916. With the nationalization of the NGSR in 1951, Secunderabad Station became part of the Indian Railways. The main building of the Secunderabad Railway Station was built by the then government in 1952.
The portico of the railway station resembles a fort by the Nizam’s architecture. In another year from now, the Secunderabad Railway Station will be transformed to resemble an airport. The station modernization work, undertaken for Rs. 720 crore, is progressing rapidly.
The authorities have prepared a master plan to provide world-class facilities and infrastructure at the Secunderabad railway station. Iconic station buildings with G+3 floors are being constructed on the north and south sides.
They will have retail shops, food stalls, and entertainment facilities. Two travelators on either side of the station, two walkways, 26 lifts, 32 escalators, two wide footbridges, and a skyway are being constructed for passengers to enter the station.
The Secunderabad East Metro Station will be connected to the skyway. A walkway on the north side and a 5,000-kilowatt solar power plant are being set up.
