It is well-known that the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) does not meet the criteria to be granted the status of an opposition party in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. However, YSRCP leaders have been demanding that they be granted opposition status. In response, leaders from TDP, Janasena, and BJP have been criticizing Jagan and his party. Amidst this, BJP senior leader and firebrand lawyer Subramanian Swamy has come forward to support YSRCP’s claim, which has sparked discussions.
Swamy stated that, technically, any party that secures 10% of the seats in a legislative assembly is entitled to the status of the opposition. He further clarified that since the TDP, BJP, and Janasena alliance is in power in Andhra Pradesh, there is no issue in granting opposition status to YSRCP.
Swamy recently filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Andhra Pradesh High Court concerning the violence that occurred during the Tirupati Deputy Mayor election. Speaking to the media today, he made key remarks on the matter. He expressed regret over the unfortunate incidents during the election, where several people were intimidated and attacked. He pointed out that only an FIR was filed regarding the incident, but no further action had been taken. He stated that he had filed a PIL seeking stringent measures to prevent such violence during elections. The PIL is scheduled for hearing on March 12, as per Swamy.
Additionally, Swamy commented on the Tirupati Laddu issue, stating that the matter had been resolved. He emphasized that no true devotee would ever consider adulterating the laddu and urged that people should accept good ideas irrespective of political affiliation. He also stressed that efforts should be made to prevent issues like adulteration from occurring in the future.
