The Indian Railways department is one of the most financially efficient government-owned travel systems in the country. Every day, crores of people travel in Indian railways coaches, including intercity trains and also local trains.
Coming to the topic now, Indian citizens have paid a shocking amount of money in fines for travelling without tickets in trains.
As presented by the railway minister, Ashwini Vaishnav himself Indian railway authorities got 2.16 crore Indians travelling without tickets in trains. These statistics are for the year 2023-24 and they have a story to tell.
Approximately ₹562 crore was collected in fines from these people. The average minimum fine for travelling in Indian railway coaches without ticket is ₹250. This can go higher if the distance of travel is substantially longer.
Nevertheless, it must be noted that Indian paid over ₹560 crore in fines to the Indian Railways in a single year. In a country that is growing fast in terms of academics and financial independence, it is also shocking to note that 2.16 crore people were caught travelling without train tickets.
Many of these individuals would have ended up paying more money in fine than what the actual ticket would have costed.
