Indian media is infamous for its sensationalism and headline-chasing culture. The same was evident during the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack. Shortly after the incident, several media outlets focused heavily on the movements of the Indian Army.
Shockingly, a few channels even broadcasted live footage of Army movements. This was completely reckless, as it risked revealing the strategic operations of the Indian Army to enemy forces.
In response, the Indian government has issued a strict advisory to media outlets regarding the coverage of Army movements.
In the interest of national security, all media platforms, news agencies, and social media users are advised to exercise utmost responsibility and strictly adhere to existing laws and regulations while reporting on matters concerning defence and security operations.
Specifically, no real-time coverage, dissemination of visuals, or reporting based on “sources-based” information related to defence operations or troop movements should be undertaken. Premature disclosure of sensitive information may inadvertently assist hostile elements and endanger operational effectiveness and the safety of personnel.
This is the right message from the Indian government at the right time. It made no sense for certain media channels to cover Indian Army movements live, as this would have been a major strategic and logical failure. Fortunately, the government responded promptly and instructed the media to refrain from such irresponsible reporting.
