BRS @ 25: Not At All An Easy Journey!

Surviving for an extended period in Telugu states’ politics is not an easy proposition for regional parties. We have seen countless political parties unable to withstand the intense nature of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana politics.

However, two regional parties managed to survive and stay relevant: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). On the occasion of BRS completing 25 glorious years, here’s a look back at their remarkable journey.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), originally known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), was founded by KCR on April 27, 2001. KCR, who was previously a senior leader in the Telugu Desam Party, launched TRS with the prime objective of achieving statehood for Telangana, a region that had long felt neglected compared to Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema.

After years of agitation and negotiations, the dream of Telangana was realized on June 2, 2014, when it officially became India’s 29th state. In the first Telangana Legislative Assembly elections held the same year, KCR’s leadership and strong regional identity helped TRS secure a landslide victory, making him the first Chief Minister of Telangana.

The party’s success was seen as a direct reward for its persistent efforts toward the formation of the state. However, in 2022, TRS was renamed Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) as KCR aimed to expand its presence nationally. This move backfired, as the party lost its strong regional identity, playing a crucial role in its crushing defeat in the 2023 elections.

Following the defeat, KCR largely confined himself to his farmhouse and rarely made public appearances. It was KTR who emerged as the face of the party over the past year and a half.

Today, BRS is holding a grand event in the presence of KCR and KTR to celebrate 25 years in Telugu politics. This event is seen as a crucial moment for a potential comeback and will serve as a platform for KCR to directly address his cadre. There is significant anticipation surrounding what KCR will announce at this major gathering.

While BRS is preparing for the 2028 Telangana elections, facing a relentless Revanth Reddy over the next three years will be no easy task. It remains to be seen how KCR and KTR will navigate this challenging period.

Another important consideration for BRS’s future will be the transition of leadership from KCR to KTR. A smooth transition will be essential if the party is to maintain its relevance and sustain a strong presence in Telangana politics.
