CM Chandrababu Naidu is chalking out a major plan to permanently secure Amaravati as the only capital of Andhra Pradesh, ensuring that future governments — especially ones like YS Jagan — cannot undo it again. Determined to prevent any disruption to the capital’s development, Naidu is working towards getting Amaravati legally notified by the Central Government, a move that would give it permanent legal status.
Naidu’s urgency stems from the bitter experience of the past five years, where the Jagan-led YSRCP government halted Amaravati’s development and tried to shift the capital to Visakhapatnam. Farmers who had sacrificed their lands for Amaravati launched prolonged protests and legal battles, successfully resisting the move. Now, Naidu wants to ensure such political disruptions never happen again.
In a meeting with Amaravati farmers and women at his Undavalli camp office, Naidu revealed that a formal proposal has already been sent to the Centre to declare Amaravati as the state capital through a central notification.
As part of this plan, PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Amaravati on May 2 to formally restart the capital construction works, signaling the beginning of a renewed chapter for the dream capital. Naidu said he would personally take up the legal notification issue with the PM during this visit.
Naidu is also examining legal possibilities under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act to back this demand. He pointed out that Hyderabad’s 10-year status as a joint capital has now ended, which clears the path for Amaravati to be officially declared as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.
Naidu targeted the previous Jagan government for stalling progress and trying to ‘erase’ Amaravati. Despite facing heavy backlash and legal hurdles, Jagan had pushed to develop Visakhapatnam as an administrative capital. However, determined farmers stood strong, forcing the courts to intervene and halt these moves.
