Shibu Soren, one of the most respected political leaders from Jharkhand and the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away on August 4, 2025, in New Delhi. He was 81 years old. His son Hemant Soren, who is currently the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, confirmed the news and expressed deep sorrow, calling it a huge personal loss.
For several months, Shibu Soren had been struggling with serious health problems. He was admitted to Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi in June due to kidney-related issues and was on ventilator support in his final days.
Born on January 11, 1944, in what is now the state of Jharkhand, Soren was a lifelong advocate for the rights of tribal communities. In the 1970s, he played a key role in forming the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which became a powerful voice for the demand to create a separate state. His efforts eventually led to the formation of Jharkhand in the year 2000.
Shibu Soren served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times. He also represented the Dumka constituency in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. At the national level, he held the position of Union Coal Minister in the government led by Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Known as “Guruji” by his supporters, Soren was not just a politician but a movement leader who gave a strong voice to tribal people and fought for their rights throughout his life.
His passing marks the end of an important chapter in Jharkhand’s political history.
