It is well known that local elections generally favor the ruling party. That is why most local body elections are usually won by candidates supported by the government in power.
However, all eyes are now on the Pulivendula ZPTC by-election. This election was delayed for nearly two years after the death of sitting ZPTC member Maheshwar Reddy from YCP. The by-election is finally being held now.
TDP has already announced Latha Pretty, wife of BTech Ravi, as their candidate. She is receiving support from local MLA Madhavi and BJP’s Jammalamadugu MLA Adi Narayana Reddy, who have started campaigning actively.
Meanwhile, YCP is deploying its full force for this crucial election. MP Avinash Reddy has also stepped in to lead the campaign. Interestingly, he requested the opposition parties to leave the seat uncontested in favor of the YCP candidate on humanitarian grounds, but his request was not accepted.
As the battle intensifies, BTech Ravi appears to be leading the charge. Reports suggest that several families who were earlier with YCP have now switched sides and joined TDP in recent days.
This ZPTC election holds great significance for YCP. Losing this election in Pulivendula, the home turf of Jagan Mohan Reddy, would be a major embarrassment. But going up against a strong NDA alliance at the height of its popularity is a tough challenge in itself.
The people of Pulivendula now face a crucial decision. It remains to be seen whether Jagan still enjoys the same level of support in a region that has long been a stronghold of the YS family.
