In a surprising move, US President Donald Trump has announced new trade penalties on India, raising tariffs to a total of 50%. This decision comes after accusations that India continues to import oil from Russia, either directly or indirectly.
Earlier this year, Trump had already imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods. Now, he’s adding another 25%, effectively doubling the import duties on Indian products entering the US.
“I have determined that the Government of India is still involved in purchasing oil from Russia,” Trump stated in a new executive order. “As per US law, Indian goods will now face an additional 25% tariff.”
This move marks a shift in Trump’s earlier friendly tone toward India. Just in February, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Trump at the White House, where both leaders discussed improving trade ties, defense deals, and military cooperation. At the time, they appeared to enjoy a strong diplomatic relationship.
However, with this latest action, Trump is now taking a more aggressive stance, especially on trade and energy matters. The decision has raised concerns in India, as the steep tariffs could hurt exports and strain economic ties between the two nations.
