In a major boost to Andhra Pradesh’s growth story, the State Government has approved the construction of a new Greenfield Airport at Kuppam in Chittoor district. The project, to be developed under the PPP model with HUDCO support, is set to be completed by 2027.
This decision is a historic win for Andhra Pradesh and particularly for Kuppam, the constituency represented by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
The project also carries a strong strategic angle. Once operational, Kuppam will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with two other major airports nearby Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport and Tirupati’s Renigunta Airport. This means three airports will operate in close range, creating a unique industrial cluster that will change the aviation map of South India.
For Bengaluru, this comes as a clear loss. Kempegowda is already overburdened with heavy passenger traffic. Many travelers from Kuppam, Hosur, and surrounding border areas currently depend on Bengaluru. Once Kuppam Airport is ready, that crowd will shift, reducing Bengaluru’s monopoly and strengthening Andhra’s edge in this tri-border area.
The credit for this milestone rests with Chandrababu Naidu, who has long pushed for Kuppam’s development. From bringing Krishna water through the HNSS canal to securing airport clearance, Naidu has shown that vision and persistence deliver results.
For Kuppam, the airport is not just an infrastructure project it is a symbol of transformation from having one of the best educational institutions to having a large metro city nearby. This represents a shift from decades of neglect to a future where connectivity, trade and opportunities will put this border region firmly on the national map.
