Generally, when a natural disaster strikes, it is the opposition leader who hits the ground, by visiting the affected areas and interacting with the public. They see it as a perfect opportunity to connect with the people in their time of need and pressurize the state government to carry out rescue and compensation activities.
But in the case of Andhra Pradesh, the situation seems to be exactly the opposite, as evident from the events following the recent Montha cyclone.
After this devastating cyclone, it was the ruling leadership, including CM Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan who got on the ground. Both leaders toured the affected areas, met with the victims, offered support, and promised fair compensation.
All of this happened while YS Jagan remained away from the scene, resting at his residence in Bengaluru. He was nowhere to be seen in Andhra Pradesh during the cyclone’s peak devastation. Surprisingly, Jagan showed no intent to stand with the public when he was needed the most.
Now, nearly a week after the cyclone, Jagan has finally made time to visit the affected regions. He arrived in Krishna district today to meet residents and discuss the cyclone’s aftermath.
However, by this point, the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister had already overseen the restoration efforts and sought compensation from the Centre. Jagan’s visit comes much later, making him the last to assess the situation, even after the government administration and his own sister Sharmila.
Several political analysts are commenting that Jagan’s visit is too late to make an impact. They argue that he has ignored the responsibilities expected from an opposition leader. On one hand, Jagan is demanding recognition as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, but when it comes to showing up and doing the actual groundwork, he seems completely missing from the picture.
