The first aircraft landing at Bhogapuram International Airport near Visakhapatnam marked a major step in Andhra Pradesh’s infrastructure growth. However, the achievement soon turned into a political argument, with both the TDP and the YSR Congress Party claiming credit for the project’s progress and completion.
Former Chief Minister YS Jagan said that key approvals were cleared during his tenure and nearly Rs 960 crore was spent on land acquisition and rehabilitation, laying a strong foundation for the airport. The TDP rejected this claim, stating that the Bhogapuram airport was first planned in 2015 under Chandrababu Naidu, with central approvals, land acquisition, and initial construction already completed before the change in government. The party alleged the project saw little movement for several years and gained speed only after the coalition returned to power.
Amid this political exchange, a key factor behind the airport’s rapid completion has been the focused push by Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, who represents North Andhra. Sources say he took the project personally, closely monitored progress, and ensured work continued in three shifts over the past year. This sustained effort helped fast track pending works and fine tuning, enabling Bhogapuram airport to reach this milestone in record time.
