It is already known that Andhra Pradesh has a total of 175 Assembly constituencies and 25 Lok Sabha constituencies while the neighbouring Telugu State Telangana has 119 Assembly and 17 MP seats.
But this number could be increased by nearly 50% as the central government is proposing the long debated delimitation program.
This new proposition that could be coming to effect as soon as the 2029 election could witness a significant jump in the total number of assembly and Parliament seats in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
According to the latest development, the central government is proposing to increase AP assembly seats to 263 and MP seats to 38. Telangana will also undergo a significant jump from the existing 119 assembly seats to 179 and 17 MP seats to 26.
This would also mean that the magic figures required to form the government in Andhra Pradesh in Telangana will also go considerably. The existing magic figure of 88 in Andhra Pradesh, will go up to 132 and in Telangana, it will go from 60 to 90.
At the fundamental level, Telugu Desam chief Chandrababu Naidu has been preparing for this for a long time. He had been repeatedly emphasising on the need to increase the number of constituencies in order to ensure centralised development.
Also, it is going to be structurally easy for decades long parties like TDP to maintain a strong foothold in the crucial assembly pockets and then build on it. But at the same time, it will be tough for relatively newer parties to have a strong swing in the majority of the constituencies.
For now, this is still in consideration by the union government, and we have to see if it would actually come to effect in the next three years. Further developments will determine the implementation of the same.
