In the last elections, Jagan fielded Chevireddy Bhaskara Reddy as the MP candidate from Ongole, moving him from his home constituency of Chandragiri.
Although it was expected that he would easily win the Ongole Lok Sabha seat, a stronghold that had previously supported the Congress and later the YSRCP, the party lost the seat due to self-inflicted errors. While the YSRCP had achieved massive consecutive victories in Ongole in the 2014 and 2019 elections, it faltered in the most recent polls.
The party had denied a ticket to the then-sitting MP, Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy who subsequently joined the TDP and won the election. A major setback for the YSRCP was the decision to replace candidates in six of the seven Assembly constituencies falling under this MP seat with the exception of Ongole itself.
Consequently, the defeat of YSRCP candidates in five of these constituencies (excluding Darsi and Yerragondapalem) is widely believed to have negatively impacted the MP candidate’s prospects. Additionally, the “non-local” sentiment is cited as another factor contributing to Chevireddy’s defeat.
Following the loss, a series of events unfolded, including Chevireddy’s arrest and imprisonment in connection with a liquor case. After being released on bail, the former MLA stayed away from district-level politics, leading many to believe he would henceforth limit his political activities to Chandragiri.
There was also intense speculation that Y.V. Subba Reddy would be announced as the in-charge for Ongole and Chevireddy will be back to Chandragiri.
But surprisingly, Chevireddy appeared in the “Vennupotu Ku Rendellu” program in Darsi, the other day.
He pledged to support District President Buchepalli Siva Prasad and vowed to fight together against the Government.
It was rumored that YV Subbareddy will be appointed as the Incharge of Ongole Parliament. So, Chevireddy going back to Ongole has surprised everyone.
The local cadre is discussing how Jagan did not learn from the old mistakes of 2024 elections.
